The best companies for a quant to work for
I am wondering if there is some kind of ranking of companies' trading desks. Something like the ranking of "The Best Places To Work For If You Are Quant"? Would like to hear your opinions. |

I do not agree. Working environment and companies culture matters a lot.. As far as the best place to work for?? Hmm I think there is no answer.. You can work for a big and well known company in the freezing NY and report to 5 bosses at the same time at the weekly status meeting or you can work for an unkown 5 people staff hedge fund, make twice more and report your boss during the cup of morning cup of coffee sitting somewhere at the beach in Cayman Islands..
The question is too general. What do you mean by the best. There are so many criterias. It is all depends on your goals, values, etc.

There are thousands of hedge funds offshore and onshore.. it is all depends on your preferences.. do you like to work for a big company or small office.. do you like to work long hours or not.. do you prefer cold climate or hot..
answer all these questions for yourself and try to find the job that matches your preference that would be THE BEST COMPANY TO WORK FOR FOR YOU |

My suggestions would be that you first should clarify with yourself of "WHAT" you want to work (and accordingly what your special area of expertise/interest is (or will be) ). This is probably the best way of approaching it .. rather than looking at whether you can sit in the sun on the Caymans ...
In our interviews we are typically NOT asking "brain teaser" questions, but we ask people of what their special areas of research interest are and what they are doing (on their private part) to stay on top in their area of expertise. We like to play business case like ideas of how the applicant could bring in his knowledge and what he/she can bring as his/her value to the company, i.e. special expertise that we could use to enhance operations/processes/models, whatever ... and this will be THE major criteria of what payment and location will be. And it is the best way to have fun at work ... Last edited by marek : 08-21-2007 at 08:57 AM. |

I think it also depends on the age of a person and his preferences regarding work load and working hours.. I am sure some people are willing to take big pay cuts to work less, others on the contrary will get a job strictly on the pay scale without regard to how many hours would be their work week and what kind of personal life would they have at this job

for me the best job is where I am treated with respect and understanding, the second factor is salary and third is location.. I do not care much about the names of the employers..
